Umpiring gives you a unique way to be involved in the game of baseball, offering a fresh perspective. It provides training while helping you develop confidence, leadership, and decision-making skills.
In partnership with our Umpire in Chief (UIC), we offer training for individuals interested in becoming an umpire. Umpiring is a great opportunity to stay involved in the game while earning extra income.
Tsawwassen Amateur Baseball fully supports BC Baseball’s Code of Conduct, which ensures that all individuals—whether players, coaches, parents, or umpires—are treated with respect. This Code of Conduct applies to everyone involved.
TABA will reimburse BCBUA membership fees for players registered with the association and provide protective equipment for umpires in the lower divisions.
Umpires are paid in cash by the home team.
For inquiries or interest in umpiring, please reach out to Mitch Friedman at mitchf7@comcast.net. With over 10 years of experience as a Chief Umpire and certification from BC BUA, Mitch is well-equipped to assist and guide you.
Umpires are expected to attend BCBUA-sponsored clinics annually and actively pursue learning opportunities through a mentorship program. They must adhere to the dress code set by both TABA and BCBUA.
Umpires will work collaboratively with the TABA allocator, ensuring their availability is up-to-date and that they accept assigned games promptly. If an umpire is unable to fulfill their assignment, they should notify the allocator as soon as possible.
Umpires are required to arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled game time, allowing sufficient time to gear up, have a pre-game discussion, and be ready for a “plate meeting” with the coaches 10 minutes prior to the game.
Umpires must have the appropriate equipment for their level and position. Any shared protective gear should be returned to its proper place after the game, and any issues with equipment should be reported to the Umpire in Chief.
Umpires assigned to Bantam, Midget, and Junior Men’s divisions are expected to have their own protective gear.
In the lower divisions, umpires are typically just one level removed from the division they are officiating. Regardless of age, all umpires continue to learn throughout their careers, with the goal of getting calls right and applying the appropriate rules.
Umpires deserve the respect and cooperation of coaches, players, and parents. Both BC Baseball and TABA have a zero-tolerance policy for verbal or physical abuse of umpires.
Once the umpires meet with the coaches at the “plate meeting” during scheduled games, they take charge of the game.
Judgment calls made by the umpire cannot be challenged.
For 15U (Bantam) and 18U (Midget), plays that involve the interpretation of a rule may be questioned by the head coach, provided the coach requests “Time” and asks to speak with the umpire. The umpire may have a discussion with the coach and, if necessary, consult their partner before either upholding or changing the ruling based on new information. The umpire’s decision is final.
At 13U (PeeWee) and below, no coach or player is permitted to question any call.
Coaches are responsible for the behavior of their fans during games. If an umpire feels a fan is disrespecting an umpire or player, they may direct the coach to address the issue.
Every umpire has the authority to eject a player or coach. Any ejections will be reported to the Umpire in Chief and the BCBUA. BC Baseball mandates suspensions for players or coaches ejected from the game.
Coaches will have the opportunity to provide feedback on umpires to the Umpire in Chief; Mitch Friedman.
